Creeks and
Streams from Jilisan (Mountain)

Mt. Jirisan
National Park was designated the first national park in South
Korea in 1967. It is also the largest mountain park in South Korea,
covering three southern provinces, Jeollabuk-do, Jeollanam-do
and Gyeongsangnam-do (440,485 square kilometers). Its highest
peak, Chonwangbang, is 1,915 m above sea level. The main climbing
route of Mt. Jirisan National Park is the Nogodan peak- Banyabong
peak- Chonwandbong peak course. It has innumerable valleys, gorges,
and waterfalls along the ridges of various sizes, and it takes
four days and three nights to get through the main course on foot.
The park is
well-protected by thick virgin forests and flora and fauna. It
has beautiful scenery with many ridges, waterfalls, springs and
rapid torrents. There are also cultural attractions such as Buddhist
temples and national treasures.

It
is a tradition to have parts of trees at important events in life,
such as weddings and birth. The most important tree is the one
that is 1,000 years old. It is considered a protector of the village.

high, 6 meters wide (trunk), and the branches are 12 meters wide.
In front of the tree is Waun Village. The villagers regard the
tree as a guardian diety. Accordingly, on the third day of the
Lunar New Year, they hold a ceremony there.
