Health
care in Seoul
Health
care in Seoul is very cheap and available to everyone. Cheap doesn't
mean bad service, the doctors are qualified, the clinics are clean
and the staff are professional. Most doctors speak some English.
The average clinic visit and/or hospital visit in Seoul is pretty
inexpensive compared to American clinic and/or hospital visits.
A case of tonsillitis involving a member of our staff came out
to about $30.00 USD including doctor visit(s) times 3, and two
orders of medication from the local pharmacy. A stay in a private
room at a major hospital for 3 days, 24 hour care, IV, emergency
room visit and medication costs USD 1,111 without insurance and
USD 427 with insurance. An emergency room visit costs USD 34 without
insurance.
After
receiving a prescription from a doctor, you may have it filled
at a pharmacy (yak guk). This should not be difficult as pharmacies
are normally located close to hospitals and clinics. Additionally,
there are pharmacies EVERYWHERE. You can purchase OTC drugs at
very reasonable prices. Additionally you can buy hair care products,
birth control, pregnancy tests, and traditional medicine at some
places. For traditional medicine, look for brown wooden compartments
with Chinese characters on them. The doctor spoke adequate English
and was capable of resolving the situation. The clinic was modern
clean, very efficient, and professional. This is the norm in and
around Seoul and South Korea. If you get sick in Seoul, don't
sweat it, treat it.
In South Korea,
there are several special medical centers and general hospitals.
It is possible to use English in some hospitals. However, the
safest and most reliable plan for foreigners is to use a general
hospital with an international clinic. Scroll to the bottom of
this page for a list of international clinics in Seoul.

Health
Insurance in Seoul
All
people employed by South Korean employers are required to have
health insurance which is usually split 50/50 by employee and
employer. If you need to go to a hospital and you have traveler's
insurance, it is best to carry your insurance card with you. There
is a significant difference in medical fees if you have your insurance
card.
